How would you define the class Writing and Rhetoric? At first to me, I didn’t know what I’d describe it as before I first started the class… But after taking the class, and learning what I did from it, I can say that Writing and Rhetoric, also known as ENG-170 is a class where you learn to effectively communicate and persuade others in a structure-oriented way. I gained so much from this class, and I hope to use it in my future endeavors.
Rhetoric is using language to affect, change, or persuade. My attitude towards using rhetoric changed throughout this course. At first, rhetoric was just a term used in English class. But there’s so much more to it. Rhetoric has so many deep principles and attributes that contribute to persuading someone or a group, such as implementing different types of arguments, and using different types of evidence such as logos, pathos, and ethos. Rhetoric can also be a term to use as the understanding of a specific type of conflict and rhetorically analysing it. Learning that there’s so much to the world of rhetoric has really amazed me. Rhetoric also changed my attitude towards my writing. I now know that it needs a lot more work and structure, and writing is not always a simple task and using rhetoric and analysing your work takes time. I’ve learned that rhetoric can be used as an advantage with my writing and make a lot of improvements. Rhetoric contains so much information and the amount of content that can be learned from it has really amazed me.
I learned many valuable skills relating to writing, research, and rhetoric through the course of Writing and Rhetoric, but I think the most valuable skill I learned from this class is when to use logos, pathos, and ethos. These are very valuable evidence principles, and can be effective in the right situations. An example is if I want to appeal to someone’s emotions, it would be great to use pathos. If I want to inform someone of a certain topic, I should use logos. As you can see, some are better to use than others in different criteria, which makes using logos, pathos and ethos also the most valuable concept I learned from this course. With this class, I learned how to use each one correctly, and used them to further strengthen my argument and used it in terms of rhetoric. With these tools, my writing has become a lot better and I can really see improvement, Overall, there are many skills that I can take from this class and use it again later in life.
I could definitely apply some of these ideas from the course Writing and Rhetoric into my professional life. I want to become a graphic designer, and I just recently declared my major. I can use the art of persuasion and appealing to an audience from rhetoric into my graphic design work. These skills that I’ve learned in Writing and Rhetoric will definitely benefit me in the long run.
In conclusion, the course Writing and Rhetoric has been an interesting journey where I’ve learned many things. I will use the skills I inherited from this course to improve myself, and to improve my life.
