Mini Assignment #3
Coronavirus Racism Proposal
The semester’s end is creeping closer and closer, and we are now introduced to our Writing and Rhetoric final project. The topic was about a problem in the world with communication, and I immediately thought of something somewhat personal and current. With a creative approach with video editing, I would like to address the following statement; the Coronavirus is causing unnecessary hate and racism towards Asians, and how the denial of communication on that it’s not Asians at fault for causing the virus to become a pandemic, My solution is to make other countries have their leaders always educate citizens on big problems and train people not to blame race for a problem, through communication. I hope to end this semester with a bang while creating my final project for the class.
Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, Asians have become involuntarily controversial with the world, since the disease started out in Wuhan, China. There is already a terrible amount of racism towards Asians before the Coronavirus incident, but the virus has now added more fuel to the fire. This can be especially seen in the United States, where Asians are getting dirty looks, threats, and people avoiding being next to them. Many Asians outside Asia are getting beaten by fellow civilians ever since the Coronavirus started to become a pandemic. Asians are getting mocked and nobody is concerned with their feelings about all of this. There’s many other things making this worse, such as Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has called the Coronavirus the “Chinese virus”. The aspect of this topic I want to approach to narrow the project’s scope and focus is the treatment of Asians during the virus and how it is unethical and not reasonable at all. I hope that this will make my project less broad, and my research more focused.
This topic is somewhat personal to me. I am Asian, and to see my people being mistreated about something that was out of our hand disgusts me. We already have experienced terrible racism and dangerous stereotypes and it just makes me mad that people think they now have an excuse to be racist to us. I have had a fellow Asian friend that has been threatened in the city because of the pandemic; a man shouting and cursing at her, telling her to go back to her country even though she has been born and raised in Brooklyn her whole life. Although I am Vietnamese and not Chinese, the world sees us all the same, therefore I think that all Asians should look out for each other in this cruel world. I believe that anybody would be interested in this topic, because the Coronavirus is a pandemic and everyone is suffering from it. I have learned to appreciate my culture and have met a lot more Asians as I went to SUNY New Paltz, and I’m glad I now have an opportunity to do an assignment regarding my race through the college.
A whole different reason why I was excited for this project was because we could do a creative approach to it. I had a few ideas, such as making a short creative story, a comic, or a video edit. I eventually chose a video edit. Since this is a current topic right now, the research material I will use will probably be a lot of journalistic commentary, and modern articles, since there most likely won’t be a various selection of scholarly sources. With my creative approach, I will be using the program Adobe After Effects. I will add effects, graphics, Youtube videos, and pictures into my video, and of course I will give proper credit to the respective owners. I look forward to implementing the creative approach into my final project.
As our final project nears, and the semester comes to an end, I hope the project will turn out okay. Writing and Rhetoric has definitely required a lot of work, and so will this project, but I hope it will be all worth it.
