Dear ePortfolio Readers,

I hope you find my essays to be well written, interesting, and engaging. I realize that a successful writing piece comes along with patience, dedication, and welcoming critiques. While attending Composition I, I learned that a good writer is one who plans ahead and makes outlines to improve the structure and outcome of the essay. A student who proofreads and edits their writing countless times before handing in their work is known to be a successful and hardworking writer. Attending Composition I has helped me improve my organizational skills and how to have  consistency throughout my writing.

Writing essays was a struggle for me before taking Composition I. I was very insecure about my writing and felt as if my work had weak factors. I struggled with grammatical errors and organization, I had a tendency to move from one topic to another instead of focusing on the main point. I attended my first class feeling nervous and hesitant about my potential in writing. I was very insecure and believed that I was only capable of receiving no higher than a B- in my class. Because of this I knew I needed to work twice as hard in order to receive the grade I wanted to improve by. I attended the first day of class with confidence that I would master my writing skills by the end of the semester. With the help of my peers, tutor, and professor who guided me to the correct path, my writings began improving and I started to gain confidence. After the first couple of essays, I realized that there were less red marks and more improvements on the assignments I turned in.

The writing strategies, concepts and practices I developed this semester have helped me in many of my other college courses as well. In Composition I,  I learned how to utilize The Sojourner Truth Library and find a variety of articles on the database. I learned how to formally cite and introduce the author of the reliable source in my writings. My Composition I course helped me learn how to grow as a writer and communicator.

Strengths:

  • Research
  • Structure
  • In-text citations

Areas to continue working on:

  • Thesis statement
  • Language use

Through English Composition, people express their emotions and/or their claim on a subject. It is a formal way to communicate to an audience about your thoughts on a specific topic. It is very important to know how to write professionally. Overall, I now feel prepared to go onto Writing and Rhetoric and write clear academic arguments and analysis-based research essays. I feel prepared because Composition has helped me become a stronger writer by helping me with grammatical errors, essay structure, tone, purpose and citation skills. I am more confident in my writing skills than before and am willing to go above and beyond to better my writing.

Thank You for your time. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Crisleidy Veloz
