English Portfolio- Reflective Cover Letter
Dear Reader,
Well for starters, this course was a great course to have and Nicole Short was a good teacher and she has helped me a lot to progress as a writer and that’s a big help to me because I want to be a journalist as my future prospects. Now, for the piece of work of mine that I put into my portfolio is one of the best essays I have written. The objective of this essay was to write a literary narrative and to choose a piece of literature varying from an excerpt of an article to a book. And I had to write about how that piece of literature has changed my perspective on literature and how that piece changed my life. I decided to choose the bible, and in the essay I wrote about how the bible actually changed my perspective about literature and what it teaches you and in the process it revealed something about itself because it warped my outlook on my personal beliefs and feelings. That was the first big assignment in this class and I chose something I was really passionate about and that was about my life, so I was very excited and confident in my work.
The next piece of work that I put into my portfolio is my rhetorical analysis paper. When I first did this paper I was really confident about it because of the topic that I chose which is Ted Bundy the American serial killer , but when I got my feedback it turns out I didn’t do that great and I was discouraged to revise, but I still wanted to because I still had confidence that I could deliver a great rhetorical analysis on it , and that’s exactly what I did. I did a lot of revisions before I decided on what was my final draft and now that I have my final draft. I’m happy that it was hard.
Over the semester being in this course has made me progress a lot as a writer. All of the works weren’t easy, they were definitely hard especially the rhetorical analysis and journalism piece. Those were my most difficult ones. Given those assignments I found myself experiencing writer’s block and difficulties when it came to writing something and still connecting it to the assignment at hand. However, I got through it and I feel like my progress in this course has become a tremendous help. One thing that I’ve learned and still honestly learning how to cut down on my ideas. I tend to have so many ideas about a topic that I want to put all of them, but in the finished product; the ideas are appreciated, but they become too much and then it lacks structure within my essay. That’s a major way how I’ve progressed in my writing, to learn how to minimize and still have a thought out and organized structure. So I would say that I have improved over this course as a writer, it was really good. I’ve learned so many new things when it comes to writing, that I have applied it to my own writing. So I believe that I’m a new improved writer and I’m so excited to start Writing Rhetoric. Throughout this course and semester English 160 has helped me a lot, I have improved and I know a lot more than I started off with and that it takes practice, etiquette to be a good writer and not just talent.
Sincerely,
Corey Warner
