Inaction in the Face of Injustice

I had a difficult but helpful conversation this weekend with extended family. I got pretty worked up on a topic close to my heart: inaction in the face of injustice.  But passion on that subject can sound a lot like blaming.

So how do you get past the Blame Problem when talking about injustice, privilege, bias, etc.?  Care to discuss?

I’m really frustrated by blame.  What good does it do? We seem to love identifying “bad guys” – and yes, they’re usually guys – then punishing them extremely harshly.  So, given the consequences, it’s natural that fear of blame puts us all in a defensive crouch. What should we do instead?

When did you last avoid a conversation for fear of blame?  Do you remember the last time you were blamed? What would you rather do or see others do? (Or are you OK with it?)

One idea we talked about today was to somehow capture what happens in Conversation One.  What might that be like, and mightn’t we lose the amazing quality that brings people back again and again?

Well, some may remember, we did actually capture one, when Janus Adams visited campus last fall.  So here, without further ado, The Janus Adams Show – Live from the Sojourner Truth Library, Friday, October 13th, 2017

Huge ups to Janus and her amazing technical team at WJFF.  Admittedly, this is not an entirely normal  edition – we don’t usually have a national celebrity and mic setup.  But the wonder is, it’s not that different.
