Portfolios & Rubric

All students in our courses create a portfolio of their writing via Hawksites, a WordPress-based website like this one.

All eligible students are required to create a digital portfolio in order to pass our classes. In order to be eligible for portfolio submission, students must complete all major assignments and maintain a grade of D or higher.

Our course portfolios have different requirements, but serve the same purpose: to encourage students to write for broad, public audience; to determine whether their writing has improved throughout the semester by illustrating process through drafting and revision, to ensure that students understand basic research and ethical citation practices, and to provide our campus and SUNY with assessment data that helps inform us how to better teach critical thinking and writing skills moving forward as we refine our curriculum.

Student portfolios are reviewed by other faculty members to ensure unbiased consideration of their proficiency. Our Writing & Rhetoric Program General Rubric  provides details on our standards, and all instructors complete portfolio assessment training every term.

NOTE: The portfolio requirements for the Fall23 semester are under review and may be updated here in August.

For Composition I, the final e-portfolio will contain the following:

  • A cover letter—a final reflective statement in which the student articulates the writing processes and progress in the course
  • Two revised essays (clean copies without grades, notes, or marks), one of which demonstrates argumentative writing, effective research skills, and proficiency in basic MLA documentation methods
  • Two drafts, one each for the revised essays above

For Writing & Rhetoric, the final e-portfolio will contain the following:

  • A cover letter—a final reflective statement in which the student articulates the writing processes and progress in the course
  •  One of our major class assignments and the two smaller assignments which lead up to it, the sum of which will demonstrate the student’s research skills, argumentative writing, ability to revise, and proficiency in basic MLA documentation methods
  • *Some Spring semesters, we also require a common ENG170/Writing & Rhetoric assignment for assessment to be included on students’ Hawksites.

Also included in all course portfolios are three documents that all students must read, review, and sign by the 3rd week of classes:

  • Academic Integrity Pledge
  • Policy Pledge
  • Permission to Share/Publish
