Summer Courses Offered by the Communication Department

Summer courses are a great way to catch up or get ahead with credits. All summer courses are offered online, which means that you can complete them from anywhere you have internet service. This summer the Communication department is offering the following classes:

  • CMM 214 Storytelling and Culture
  • CMM 355 Nonverbal Communication, taught by Stellina Chapman
  • CMM 359 Communication Among Cultures, taught by Stellina Chapman
  • LIN 413 Sociolinguistics, taught by Oksana Laleko

Registration for the summer session opens on April 12. You do not need your advisor’s permission to register for summer courses. Be sure to check the start and end dates of each class on the Summer 2021 schedule of classes.

Don’t delay: Schedule a meeting NOW to meet with your advisor BEFORE APRIL 9.

Meet with your advisor remotely (Zoom, Webex, BB Collaborate, phone, etc.) to go over your Fall schedule and discuss your progress toward graduation. Don’t forget to use My Schedule Planner to design your preferred schedule for next semester.

Meet With Your Major Advisor—Be Prepared!

Now that the Fall 2021 schedule of classes is posted, you should be setting up an appointment to meet virtually with your major advisor. You must meet with your major advisor in order to be cleared to register. Before your meeting, make sure to have a draft schedule made in My Schedule Planner (accessed through my.newpaltz.edu) and have your progress report on hand. Don’t wait to set up your meeting!

New Course: CMM393 Crisis, Risk, and Disaster Communication

The Spring 2021 schedule of classes should release soon, and on it will be one new Communication class: CMM393 Crisis, Risk, and Disaster Communication, taught by Jack Harris.

Crisis, Risk, and Disaster Communication acquaints students with the fundamentals of crisis and disaster communication and focuses on the broader collaborative and stakeholder environment in which crisis and disaster communication takes place. Students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of crisis and risk communication and the importance of stakeholder engagement and community collaboration for communicating about crisis, risk, and disaster. Dr. Harris is active in disaster planning, response, and recovery as co-chair of a county Community Organizations Active in Disaster collaboration (COAD), with a state VOAD, and as a member of a local emergency management planning council. His research and writing focuses on organizational resilience, long-term recovery after disaster, and cross-sector collaborations for solving complex public problems.

Networking For Internships in a Virtual World

Future interns, it is never too early to begin networking! Networking can open doors and reveal opportunities you would’ve never thought of. Since students are responsible for finding their own internships (and then getting them approved by Nancy Heiz before starting), networking is important so you can scout for the internship that best suits you. Contribute to The Teller’s October Issue

The Teller magazine, a SUNY New Paltz art and lifestyle publication, is currently looking for contributors for their October issue, which is themed Reformation.
The magazine consists of a large lifestyle portion, as well as literature and art. Each issue is themed and is divided into the following sections: Adventure & Culture, Home, Health & Wellness, Home, Fashion & Beauty, Food, and Literature & Art (includes poetry, short stories, photography, art, playlists, etc.). Their archive of past issues can be found here.
They have a rotating set of contributing writers and no set writing staff so each issue is completely unique. Any SUNY New Paltz student is welcome to contribute.
