Gershoff, Elizabeth T. “MORE HARM THAN GOOD: A SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON THE INTENDED AND UNINTENDED EFFECTS OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT ON CHILDREN.” JSTOR, 2010, https://www.jstor.org/stable/25766386?Search=yes&resultItemClick=true&searchText=physical+discipline&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dphysical%2Bdiscipline%26so%3Drel&ab_segments=0%2Fbasic_search_gsv2%2Fcontrol&refreqid=fastly-default%3Aff31cef9ece38444c8facc7d7b7c472f&seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents. This first source scopes in on all the effects that come of corporal punishment. It doesn’t seem to be biased since the source’s language is very much like a research paper. The source goes into depth on the intended effects of corporate punishment as well as the effects that are not Intended. It addresses the long-term effects of corporate punishment on a child which is a talking point in my research proposal. I will use this source to support points made in my research proposal, the ones that involve the long-term effects of spanking/hitting as a form of discipline.
Gershoff, Elizabeth T. “Spanking and Child Development: We … – Wiley Online Library.” Spanking and Child Development: We Know Enough Now to Stop Hitting Our Children, 10 July 2013, https://srcd.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/cdep.12038.
This source has a more modern take on child discipline. Its main talking point is that in today’s day and age we know better than to hit our children as a form of discipline. This article leans more towards the stance that spanking is bad. It only talks about the negative effects and how it is ineffective. It also gets into the science of things and neurological effects. This source will be very helpful to me since my thesis claims I am against corporal punishment. All the points made in this article take the stance that this method of discipline is ineffective.
Afifi, Tracie O., et al. “Spanking and Adult Mental Health Impairment: The Case for the Designation of Spanking as an Adverse Childhood Experience.” Child Abuse & Neglect, Pergamon, 23 Jan. 2017, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0145213417300145.
This source is a research type of article that supplies a lot of data and scientific information. It delves into the different effects that spanking and hitting can have on adult mental health, including depression and substance abuse problems. A lot of surveys and studies were conducted in order to get the information and data provided. This source takes a scientific stance on the issue which is nice, and a change of pace compared to other articles on my topic since most of them are biased. It is all based on statistics. I will use this source in my research in order to give actual scientific evidence to support my thesis.
Dobbs, Terry. “MSD – Ministry of Social Development.” WHAT DO CHILDREN TELL US ABOUT PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT AS A RISK FACTOR FOR CHILD ABUSE?, Mar. 2007, https://www.msd.govt.nz/documents/about-msd-and-our-work/publications-resources/journals-and-magazines/social-policy-journal/spj28/28-pages-158-178.pdf.
This source is a pdf file on how physical discipline can be a risk factor for child abuse. In this file, there are many studies conducted on children. It addresses how physical discipline can escalate into child abuse and when it is considered child abuse. This was another talking point in my research proposal so I think that this source can definitely support an argument that I’d like to make. The argument that I’d like to support is that physical discipline is one of the leading factors when it comes to child abuse. More often than not physical discipline crosse that line.
Chief, Editor in. “18 Corporal Punishment Pros and Cons.” ConnectUS, 10 Jan. 2019, https://connectusfund.org/18-corporal-punishment-pros-and-cons.
This article supplies both pros and cons when it comes to corporal punishment. It highlights how 19 states still allow corporal punishment and go in-depth on why. I mainly want to use this source as a counterargument in my research paper. People do believe that physical discipline is beneficial for children, so I think that it is important to explore the other side of my bias. I mainly want to focus on the list of pros that this source supplies and consider those arguments valid or not. I’m not sure if I need to add a counterargument on my paper but I also don’t think it would hurt.
Reflection
The process of writing this assignment wasn’t very difficult. I think the hardest part for me was actually finding the resources. I used the library’s database to find some of my sources and the rest I found on Google Scholar. I honestly still struggle with finding interest in writing about this topic. I just get stuck sometimes when writing but I make it work. Going into the assignment with that mindset made it a drag to get this paper done but nevertheless, I did. I think the weakest part of my paper was mentioning how I will use the sources in my paper. I felt like I had a general idea of how I would use them, but I still felt like I could have done a better job on that part. I felt like the strongest part of my paper was showing what stance the sources take on my topic. I feel like I chose my sources according to the points that I made in my proposal.
