Spring of Gay Black Feminine Joy | 5:00pm. In this critical moment, Lester Mayers, a Gay-Black-Feminine man, encourages his unique and underrepresented community to raise their voices and pens and prove that they are more than stereotypes/tokens / jokes – identities forced upon them by the white-hetero American gaze. Written to a specific audience, without compromise, Mayers sets out to analyze his own existence as it relates to history, the present, and the future. With pathos as his greatest tool, Mayers writes back at the homophobic show of loneliness & isolation throttled within the Black community. This piece was written outside the lens of European penetration, and though it was created as an offering to a specific group of people, all readers are invited to open their hearts and enter the unconquerable fortress of Gay-Black-Feminine men. Trigger warnings: homelessness, sexual historic trauma, racism, queer-phobic pejoratives, mental health and disruptions of religious views. | Zoom Link

How Race, Class, and Gender Influence Student Perceptions of Vaccines: Findings from a Campus Attitudes Survey | 12:30-1:45pm. Facilitator: Benjamin Junge. I will present results from an online vaccine-attitudes survey conducted among SUNY-New Paltz students during the Fall 2020 semester (n=341). The aim of the research was to identify correlates of acceptance and hesitancy around a safe-and-effective vaccine for COVID-19, prior to national rollout—specially, how race, class, and gender influence vaccine attitudes on our campus. Attitudes examined included concerns about the vaccine itself (concerns over side effects, toxicity, etc.), around vaccination policy (including which populations should be prioritized), and trust and distrust in available information sources (including the government, the University, and online social media). Echoing earlier studies from public health and medical anthropology, we find significantly lower enthusiasm and greater hesitancy among students who chose race/ethnicity categories other than “white.” These results will inform a critical discussion about matters of race privilege as it enters into vaccine rollout. | WebEx Recording Link
