This lesson is geared towards grades 3-5. One objective of this lesson was that students will be able to classify animals into mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, according to their physical characteristics.
The purpose for learning is for students to learn about how animals are classified, different categories of classification, and the difference between animals with and without a vertebral column.
Learning Standard: New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards LS3.B Variation of Traits: Different Organisms Vary in How They Look and Function Because They Have Different Inherited Information.
This lesson aims to develop classification skills, observation skills, and communication skills.

Kidney Beans Day 1 (placed in blue food coloring) October 11th
Kidney Beans Day 7 (placed in food coloring) October 17th
Kidney Beans Day 8 October 18th
Kidney Beans Day 12 October 22nd (blue food coloring)
Kidney Beans Day 12 October 22nd (placed in seltzer water)
Kidney Beans Day 22 November 1st (blue food coloring)
Kidney Beans Day 22 November 1st (seltzer water)
Kidney Beans Day 22 November 1st (blue food coloring)
Kidney Beans Day 22 November 1st (seltzer water)
The predictions our team came up with were 1)the blue food coloring will cause the plant that sprouts to turn blue, and 2) the seltzer will cause the plant to grow less because there is more CO2. Our first prediction proved to be false, as the color of the water did not have any impact on the growth or color of the plant. Our second prediction proved to be false as well, as the seltzer did not have an impact on the growth of the kidney beans, even though these beans took longer to sprout, which may or may not be attributed to the seltzer water.

Topic: Measurement (Math)
Concepts: measure real life objects using paper clips and estimate length of desk, chair, pencil, etc.
Vocabulary: Length, measure, estimate
Supplies: Paper clips, booklet to record observations, ruler
Directions: Estimate length of objects using paper clips, then actually measure the objects with a ruler. Record observations in science notebook.
Grade(s): 2-3
Topic: Worms (Science)
Concepts: Making predictions, kindness towards living things, learning about worms
Vocabulary: Habitat-home, prediction-educated guess
Supplies: Worm, paper towel, plate, soil
Directions: Make predictions about whether a worm prefers the light or the dark and which side is the front, and then test those predictions.
Grade(s): 3-4
Topic: Astronomy (Science)
Concepts: Identify common constellations
Vocabulary: Sky, stars, constellations, telescope, binoculars
Supplies: Construction paper, sticky stars, markers/craypns
Directions: Use app called “Skyview” to identify common constellations. Using sticky stars, replicate constellations on paper.
Grade(s): 5-6
Topic: Astronomy (Science)
Title: Making a Comet
Concepts: What comets look like and what they are made of
Vocabulary: nucleus, comet, meteor, gas, snow, ice, sand
Supplies: Garbage bag, scissors, ball, streamers, yarn, rubber band
Directions: Wrap ball in garbage bag and tie with rubber band. Attach streamers and yarn.
Grade(s): 3
Topic: Graphing
Title: Exploring Types of Graphs
Concepts: learn difference between people, concrete, pictographs, bar graphs, and histograms
Vocabulary: types of graphs
Directions: Divide children into five groups. Assign each group a type of graph. Have them collect data and construct a graph on a sheet of paper. Discuss the difference between each graph.
