History

The Assembly Art Journal is an online art publication for the School of Fine and Performing Arts at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Assembly was originally created in the Spring of 2020, to celebrate the work of the then graduating BFA students. Due to the emerging pandemic, these students were unable to physically showcase their work, as per usual. In an attempt to still broadcast this body of work to the community, Assembly was born.

Assembly was well received and over the course of the next four years, the Assembly Art Journal continued to grow!

In 2021, the second issue of the journal enlisted two student leads, Jessica Beckwith and Elizabeth Hunt. This issue featured artwork from BFA and MFA students as well as alumni. After the second issue was released, Assembly continued to evolve, and sought out a larger student body to put this publication together.

In 2022, Assembly was offered as a class for the very first time! Fine and Performing Arts students gathered to collaborate with one another. The third issue of the journal expanded as well, including design projects, poetry, critical art theory, art history essays, and interviews!

In 2023, our staff of 13 students helped calling in submissions with a theme in mind. Issuu 4’s “Altered Self” was designed around the concept of change and the idea that most of us are afraid to face it head on. We are not only featuring change in artists’ personal journeys but also changes in communities, perspectives, craft, and relationships. How do we mark change? How does change mark us? What kind of artist have you developed into?

Finally, this brings us to today and the 2024 Assembly team.

Assembly Art Journal has once again been offered as a class, and we hope to make this next issue even better than the last!
