2020
2020 Symposium
The success of the previous year’s event inspired us
to expand our horizons and invite participants from further afield for the second SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium, which was scheduled for April 18, 2020.
Once again, the event had an enthusiastic response, and we were pleased to accept forty-two papers from another competitive group of applicants. We happily anticipated hosting participants from over twenty-five collegiate institutions across the Northeast, but the COVID-19 pandemic derailed our original plans and forced us to cancel the event. Students were instead invited to submit their papers for publication in a special volume, which was completed in December 2020 and is available here for free download. The twenty-seven contributed essays transport the reader across the globe, from antiquity to the present day, and it is energizing to see what promising future talent exists in the fields of art history, archaeology, and architectural history. We greatly appreciate the students’ fortitude in completing these papers in truly challenging circumstances, often physically far-removed from their campuses’ library and archival resources while grappling with a sudden transition to entirely online courses.
