Alumnus Reuben Slater publishes online article, “Margaret Mead’s Call for Less “Orthodox” Grantmaking”

Alumnus Reuben Slater recently published an article documenting how Margaret Mead’s “entire life’s work challenged established ideas about culture, intelligence, and merit.” Slater begins the article with analysis of a letter Mead wrote to the director of the Ford Foundation’s Behavioral Sciences program in which she critiques his list of the “great men in anthropology,” offering instead her own list of “able people.” From there, he goes on to demonstrate how this ethos permeated her career as a whole.
