Remembering the Ancestors

Remembering the Ancestors – Feb 27
In Kingston NY, just 20 minutes north of New Paltz, there is a large African burial ground in the middle of a residential neighborhood. When it was established in the mid 1700s, the burial ground was on the outskirts of town and was a place where free and enslaved Africans could bury, and interact with, their ancestors. Sold to a lumber company in 1870, the site was eventually swallowed up by urban expansion and was forgotten. Knowledge of the burial ground resurfaced in the late 1990’s, but it wasn’t until 2019 that Harambee, a local African-American led community organization, managed to purchase the property and start the process of preserving and honoring the ancestors.
Please join us for a presentation on the work being done on the Pine Street African Burial Ground and find out how you may be able to participate during summer 2023.
Please share with your students!
