Paid Internship Opportunities at the Brooklyn Museum for Summer 2023

The Brooklyn Museum Summer Internship is a full-time paid opportunity that runs from May 30- August 4, 2023. Interns receive $17 per hour and work 35 hours per week. Selected interns will be paired with a supervisor and integrated into one of our departments, participating fully in day-to-day workplace activities and projects with the guidance of full-time staff members. In addition to gaining extensive work experience, they will also attend seminars that focus on current museum practices, the role of museums in society, and how they might imagine the future.

Available positions for Undergraduates, recent graduates, and those without higher education and 3+ years of work experience (limited positions available for Graduate students).

 

ARCHIVES (Onsite) The Brooklyn Museum’s Archives document the various departments and activities of the Museum from 1823 through present day. Working with the Archivist and Records Manager, the intern will process several of the smaller archival collections including the Natural History Department Records (1851-1964) and the Printed Ephemera Collection (1927-2015). The intern will arrange and describe the collections and create finding aids in ArchivesSpace. The Archivist and Records Manager will provide training in how to use an archive, basic archival theory, and in ArchivesSpace to help the intern complete the project. All are welcome to apply.

CONSERVATION (Onsite)— The intern will assist conservators on preventive conservation activities that could include working with environmental data, integrated pest management activities, making storage housings and containers for artworks, applying accession numbers, condition photography and performing minor treatments under supervision. This internship will serve as an introduction to the field of art conservation. The ideal candidate has an interest in science, art and loves working with their hands.

CURATORIAL: AMERICAN ART (Hybrid)  Working directly with the Assistant Curator of American Art, the intern will provide research and planning support for an upcoming reinstallation of the American art galleries. Research over the course of the internship will be focused on works selected from the permanent collection for the reinstallation and may be informed by the Intern’s own area(s) of interest in American art. Throughout the summer, the Intern will gain insight into the process of working toward the reinstallation of a permanent collection, and may work with checklists in The Museum System (TMS), draft wall didactics, accompany curators on visits to object storage, and obtain experience working with other Museum departments. The ideal candidate will have a background in art history, including familiarity with American art before 1960, experience with art historical research methods, and excellent communication and organizational skills.

CURATORIAL: ARTS OF THE AMERICAS (Hybrid) Working directly with the Senior Curator of the Arts of the Americas and the department curatorial assistant, the intern provides departmental support, particularly with research and writing for a repatriation report. The intern may also conduct research, planning, and organization for a traveling Hopi exhibition, collection rotations, and gallery reinstallations. Ideal candidates have prior research experience; excellent writing, communication and organizational skills, including a meticulous attention to detail; a working knowledge of Native American Art; and an interest in a museum career.  

CURATORIAL: CONTEMPORARY ART (Hybrid)— Working with the Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Curatorial Assistant of Modern and Contemporary Art, the intern assists with research, planning, and organization for upcoming exhibitions and acquisitions, and provides general departmental support. Ideal candidates are current or recent undergraduates with strong organizational, research, and writing skills and an interest in contemporary art. Previous related coursework or related work experiences are a plus.

CURATORIAL: DECORATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN (Hybrid)  The Decorative Arts and Design Department in collaboration with the entirety of the Arts of the Americas Department is participating in a reinstallation of our American Art Galleries, opening in 2025. Working directly with the Senior and Assistant Curators, the intern will provide research for the decorative arts and design objects going on view and specifically focus on providing detailed provenance information. In addition to the American Galleries project, the candidate will assist the curators in reviewing the collection for potential deaccessioning (i.e. the process of removing accessioned artwork from the Museum due to insufficient quality and merit). The intern will research classes of objects, including furniture, textiles, ceramics, and glass. No previous experience in the decorative arts or design is required, but an interest in learning about the history and analysis of objects is a necessity. Requirements include: superior research and writing abilities; excellent communication and organizational skills, including meticulous attention to detail; an interest in history, decorative arts, design, craft; and being a self-starter.

CURATORIAL: EGYPTIAN, CLASSICAL AND NEAR EASTERN ART (Undergraduate)— The Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Art (ECANEA) curatorial intern primarily assists with collections documentation, archive management, and exhibition planning. Projects include digital imaging, data entry, and research. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic and dependable, with an interest in ancient Egyptian, Classical, or ancient Near Eastern history and art. Previous related coursework or related experiences are a plus.

CURATORIAL—PHOTOGRAPHY (Hybrid)— Working directly with the Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator of Photography, the intern assists with research, planning, and organization for upcoming exhibitions and acquisitions. Ideal candidates have prior research experience or coursework in the history of photography and twentieth-century visual culture; excellent communication and organizational skills; and an interest in a museum career.

EDUCATION—FAMILY & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS (Hybrid)  The intern will collaborate with the Family Programs Coordinator in the delivery of our summer intergenerational programming to diverse audiences ages 4 through adult. The intern will learn the ins and outs of out-of-school learning through supporting and teaching programs such as First Saturday’s Hands-on Art, BKM Summer Camp’s after-camp, and the Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program Summer Camp. Additional projects include developing in-gallery materials and community research. The ideal intern has experience in working with multigenerational audiences; basic studio art-making and photography skills; be friendly, outgoing, and detail-oriented; and must be available for one weekend day per week.

FINANCE (Onsite): The Finance department is responsible for the budgeting, planning, and accounting of the financial operations of the museum. To assist the Director of Financial Planning and Budget, the intern’s responsibilities will include analyzing reports, providing administrative support, and assisting with audits and data entry. The intern will observe different aspects of accounting, portfolio management, and support efforts to provide our staff with greater accessibility and transparency through our financial reporting. Applicants should have knowledge of general accounting principles as well as an interest in administrative and nonprofit finance practices. The intern should have some experience with Excel, Google Suites and be interested in financial management in cultural institutions.

OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF CURATORIAL AFFAIRS (Hybrid) — As an encyclopedic institution almost 200 years old, the Brooklyn Museum has a vast collection of objects from all over the world and from all different eras, with coinciding data relating to these objects. This Summer, there will be a large undertaking to review, update records, and further catalog our collections and artist information. This intern must be able to work partially onsite and will support this project through data entry, research, and record management. This intern will be exposed to multiple collections and departments, but will report directly to the Assistant Curator of Collections. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, has experience in archival research, and has an interest in permanent collections of Museums.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE AND ENGAGEMENT (Onsite)  The vision of the Visitor Experience and Engagement (VEE) Department is to provide a warm and welcoming environment that offers inclusive, inspirational, and transformative experiences for visitors of all backgrounds and abilities by anticipating their needs, exceeding their expectations through world-class customer service, and encouraging meaningful engagement with art and ideas through innovative interpretation. As part of VEE, the intern will provide support, particularly with organizing departmental materials such as training documents for the VE front-of-house team, signage storage, and office archives. The candidate will also provide input for ongoing projects such as the VEE front-of-house guide, a document that assists our Admissions staff in the membership and admission desks. An interest in the museum field is welcome but not required. Essential qualities for this internship include attention to detail, organizational skills, excellent communication and writing skills, and creative problem-solving. Previous experience in customer service is a plus.
