“Happiest Season”, New favorite holiday movie?
The movie Happiest Season is a rom com about two lesbian lovers named Harper and Abby. Harper tries to get Abby to love Christmas just as much as she does. So, in order to get her in the Christmas spirit, she invites Abby to spend the holiday with her family. There were, however, many complications during what was supposed to be this lovely holiday vacation. Family arguments broke out, secrets were told, and people grew apart and some people even grew closer. This movie was released November 25,2020 and was directed by Clea DuVall.
DuVall did a great job keeping the audience on their feet. Throughout the movie, there is a lot of plot twists and turns that I was not expecting. But it wasn’t a dramatic amount of change that had me confused the whole time. It was change I could keep up with. The movie starts off with a little problem of abby not loving the idea of christmas. In order to try and solve that problem, a bigger problem arises; that being that harper didn’t come out to her parents yet. Eventually that turned into jealousy issues with harpers ex-boyfriend arriving and her acting like a completely different person. One of harpers sisters threatens to out them when she sees them kiss but on her way to do that we see that she is having family issues of her own. The problems all escalated in the perfect way. I think that by making problem after problem the audience didn’t know what to expect and that’s one of the many things that made this moving enteraining. No one wants to watch a movie where the problems are predictable.
Another great aspect of the movie is the mood/tone portrayed. During the movie there is a lot of changes in mood either between certain characters or within one character alone. I feel DuVall does the best at this in regards to the character, harper. Throughout the movie, she has an inner battle with the decision of coming out to her family who is pretty conservative while trying to maintain the relationship she has with her girlfriend abby. Being around different people she would act different ways. By this I mean, around her parents and other family members, she would not show affection towards abby. However, when they are out by themselves or alone in general she shows her love, tells her she loves her, kisses her etc.
A script of a movie is literally most important part. Without the script, there is no movie. DuVall did a great job of making the script interesting while allowing each character to be its own person. In some movies there are characers that are important and don’t really play as much of a role as they should. In this movie, every character was equally important and honestly it made the movie great. We got to see everyones reaction to certain situations and we also got to appreciate the personalities of those characters.
I feel that “Happiest Season” is a great holiday movie and movie and general. It’s a type of movie that everyone can watch. Whether it be a hot day in july or christmas eve, this movie will make you laugh, cry, and make you go back to the kitchen for more popcorn.
