Love or Hate?

In 10 Things I Hate About You, you learn a lot about the effects of making mistakes and even more the power of forgiveness. The movie is a 5 out of 5 stars. It is the perfect romance movie.  Yes, you may shed some tears, but it is a wonderful movie. The 1999 movie directed by Gil Junger and written by Karen McCullah, Kristen Smith and yes, even Shakespeare. Surprising I know.

The movie 10 Things I Hate About You is about the new kid in school, Cameron, falling in love with Bianca Stratford. Cameron and Michael do what they can to come up with a plan for Bianca to date. Her father forbids it. Their father tells Bianca if Kat wants to do it she can as well. They come with the plan to get Patrick, the ‘bad boy’ to ask out Kat Stratford.  Kat and Bianca are complete opposite. Bianca is outgoing while Kat is stuck up. Michael and Cameron get Joey Donner to pay Patrick to go out with Kat. Joey thinks it’s so he can date Bianca. It is not. Kat keeps denying Patrick while Bianca and Cameron are becoming closer. Kat ends up getting a soft spot for Patrick. They go on a couple of dates. Unfortunately, at prom Kat finds out about the money. She ends up storming out and becomes furious with Patrick. In class the next day she reads her poem. Patrick ends up apologizing for the money and they end up together. So does Bianca and Cameron.

The movie has a lot of up and downs. I think that what sucks the viewers in. It isn’t just a sob story romance movie. I feel most romance movies make you cry hysterically. For this movie for me was not the case. I feel I was laughing more. Some might argue that the story line was a little crazy to pay attention to. I mean there were a couple relationships happening or trying to happen.

The characters were portrayed perfectly by the Actors. I feel that really made the movie come together. With very well-known actors like Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles they really made the movie seem so passionate with the chemistry between the two. They portrayed Kat and Patrick. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynick (Cameron and Bianca) the two also had amazing chemistry which made the movie feel so real.

Before I mentioned Kat Stratford’s infamous quote, “I hate the way you talk to me, I hate the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car; I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick, it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right; I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” (10 things). The quote basically sums up her relationship with Patrick. How it is so up and down. How even after getting paid to go out with her, she could never hate him. He even stopped caring for the money when they both fell for each other. You can never hate someone you love. You can be angry, but I don’t think you can hate whoever you love.

I mentioned before Shakespeare was one of the writers of the movie. The movie was based on one of his stories, The Taming of the Shrew. The characters of 10 Things I Hate About You are solely based on Shakespeare’s. In the movie itself they mentioned ‘the shrew’. Michael mentioned that Kat was the shrew. “Yea. Just another encounter with the shrew.” (Michael). In Shakespeare’s play the ‘shrew’ means difficult to be with. Which sums up Kats character. She was very opinionated and uptight. The movie even kept some of the same names as the play. Including Bianca and Katherina (Kat). The boys in the movie have the more modern names instead of the originals, Petruchio and Lucentio.

Overall, I think this movie is 5 out of 5 stars. I think the movie has the perfect balance of comedy and romance. The characters really pull the whole movie together. 10 things I hate About You is worth watching. It’s a perfect movie night movie. Whether it is with your partner or a family member. It is a great movie to enjoy with anyone. It also shows that even if people make mistakes, it is important to forgive. Everyone will make them. Especially if they are in love.

Reflection:

My writing process was pretty simple. I watched the movie over again and took some noted during it. I made a small outline just to know where to add certain information. It affected my final paper because it helped my organization of it. The peer review was also helpful. My partner explained that I had too much detail in my summary. I had over 400 words so I understood. I think in peer review I am still a little nervous to be talking to new people, so it still only works a little bit. I have been using MLA format since middle school. Around 8th grade we started to learn it. Im used to writing in it so for this paper it wasn’t any different. I did enjoy the movie I reviewed. It is my favorite movie in fact. It made the writing process a lot easier since I was enjoying what I was writing. Other past papers have helped me on this one. Mainly by just remembering not to get lost in thought and not being organized. I think I would give myself around an 85. I don’t think I am missing anything, but my grammar and formatting could be off. I know I could always be better at grammar. It has always been an issue for me.
