Love or Hate?
In 10 Things I Hate About You, you learn a lot about the effects of making mistakes and even more the power of forgiveness. The movie is a 5 out of 5 stars. It is the perfect romance movie. Yes, you may shed some tears, but it is a wonderful movie. The 1999 movie directed by Gil Junger and written by Karen McCullah, Kristen Smith and yes, even Shakespeare. Surprising I know.
10 Things I Hate About You is about the new boy in school, Cameron, falling in love with Bianca Strantford. Michael, his tour guide, welcomed him into the school and warned him about Bianca. The Strantford sisters cannot date. Cameron ends up learning French to tutor Bianca to end up being closer to her. Bianca always begs her father to go out. Yet, his rules are ‘no dating ‘till you graduate.’ Which ends up turning into ‘Bianca can date when she does.’ Her father means once Kat dates, Bianca can date. Which is very difficult for Bianca since Kat is very uptight and does not date or go out. Cameron and Michael come up with a plan to get someone to go out with Kat. They then decide that Patrick is their guy. Then the next part of their plan was to get a “backer”. A backer is someone who has money but is stupid. Their choice was Joey Donner, a boy that likes Bianca. Joey then pays Patrick 50 dollars each time he takes Kat out on a date. Joey thinks this is all so he could end up with Bianca but, its all for Cameron. Kat is very hard to get so Joey ups the price to 100 dollars a date. Bianca knows all about the plan. Patrick starts to go to her favorite things so she could ease up to him. Bianca begs Kat to go to this big party which, they end up going. Kat gets very drunk. Patrick is the one who takes care of her. They end up falling for each other. Bianca and Cameron kiss after the party. On the other hand, Patrick rejects Kat’s kiss. Mainly since she was drunk but, she gets very mad. To make it up to her, he sings and dances all around the bleachers during her soccer practice. To get him out of detention, Bianca flashes the teacher in charge. They go on a paintball date and finally kiss. Patrick asks her to prom, but Kat says no. Bianca begs Kat to go so she could, and she agrees. During prom, Kat finds out about the plan and the money. She storms out. In her class she reads her infamous poem. He apologizes for the money, and they end up together.
The movie has a lot of up and downs. I think that what sucks the viewers in. It isn’t just a sob story romance movie. I feel most romance movies make you cry hysterically. For this movie for me was not the case. I feel I was laughing more. Some might argue that the story line was a little crazy to pay attention to. I mean there were a couple relationships happening or trying to happen.
The characters were portrayed perfectly by the Actors. I feel that really made the movie come together. With very well-known actors like Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles they really made the movie seem so passionate with the chemistry between the two. They portrayed Kat and Patrick. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynick (Cameron and Bianca) the two also had amazing chemistry which made the movie feel so real.
Before I mentioned Kat Stratford’s infamous quote, “I hate the way you talk to me, I hate the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car; I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick, it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right; I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” The quote basically sums up her relationship with Patrick. How it is so up and down. How even after getting paid to go out with her, she could never hate him. He even stopped caring for the money when they both fell for each other.
I mentioned before Shakespeare was one of the writers of the movie. The movie was based on one of his stories, “The Taming of the Shrew.” The characters of 10 Things I Hate About You are solely based on Shakespeare’s. In the movie itself they mentioned ‘the shrew’. Michael mentioned that Kat was the shrew. “Yea. Just another encounter with the shrew.” (Michael). In Shakespeare’s play the ‘shrew’ means difficult to be with. Which sums up Kats character. She was very opinionated and uptight. The movie even kept some of the same names as the play. Including Bianca and Katherina (Kat). The boys in the movie have the more modern names instead of the originals, Petruchio and Lucentio.
Overall, I think this movie is 5 out of 5 stars. I think the movie has the perfect balance of comedy and romance. The characters really pull the whole movie together. 10 things I hate About You is worth watching. It’s a perfect movie night movie. It also shows that even if people make mistakes, it is important to forgive. Everyone will make them. Especially if they are in love.
