The position I have chosen for this persuasive essay is that one business can in fact make a difference in a global problem. Companies like JP Morgan, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Walmart to name a few. These large companies are essentially untouchable in their mass wealth and control over the market and economy. These companies are the leaders in their respective fields and have approached the line of monopoly in some cases. The companies previously mentioned have incredible power not only in the market but also in other aspects of life, such as pollution, child labor, and in some cases the government. Since there is so much power and wealth among these big businesses, I think it is possible for one business to make a substantial difference in a global problem if not problems.
I have chosen to write to Doug McMillon, The current and fifth Chief Executive Officer of Walmart. I chose Walmart specifically because it is not a technology company and deals with retail. This leaves more opportunities to bring up waste management in the stores and in the production factories. This will bring a closer look into the pollution caused by companies along with the waste made by each store individually. I want to ask Doug McMillon what he is going to do regarding emissions and pollution contributing to global warming and environmental pollution in general. With so many current global issues, it is fairly easy and widely available to find a report on what Walmart has and has not been doing. For example, Walmart pledged $100 million for a racial equity center. As shown, Walmart has the money to use on global issues and will use that money to raise awareness or help find a solution to a worldwide problem. An example of this happening currently is Microsoft. Bill Gates is doing quite a lot for the environmental crisis. He has funded projects that are developing cheap and easy ways to make clean drinking water for third world countries, along with funding development for cardboard microscopes and centrifuges that make it possible for people in these third world countries to identify diseases such as malaria, African sleeping sickness, HIV and tuberculosis. I believe that Bill Gates has paved a path for other big businesses and has broken down some of the stigmas like “big means bad” when it comes to the business world. With proper funding and ethics, businesses can make a difference in the world.
