The new waves of Fortnite and Call of Duty video games have hooked millions of young men and women. Games that offer character customization and multiplayer games like 6v6 are attracting new video game players. Raves of these games have spread across all social media platforms and with that came a rise in addictions to these well-made games. Oftentimes, players would spend hours just upgrading their tools/weapons. Video game addiction is characterized by a severe lack of control over gaming habits, often resulting in negative repercussions in daily functions, including personal, behavioral, social, educational, and work responsibilities. We as a society are now aware of the damaging effects of prolonged video game use on our younger generation. Those who suffer from this condition are unable to maintain everyday functions, researchers have considered video game addiction to be a behavioral disorder, resembling that of gambling addiction, in which the adrenaline of winning becomes the main reason for continuing to indulge oneself in playing. Addictions such as this one target the brain’s reward center, triggering the release of the “feel good/reward” dopamine chemical, thus creating a craving for that feeling. This allows the brain to justify the individual’s compulsive actions to recreate the chemical reaction. Many young men have spent 3-7 hours per week playing video games, which roughly is estimated to be 2.3 years in the average lifetime. As young people’s minds develop, the overbearing fixation on video games causes significant distress, alongside their mental, social, and physical health. Although an exaggeration, South Park’s EPS “Make Love, Not Warcraft”, highlights the damaging effects of obsessing over video games- the characters at their peak of winning the game, have taken on a stereotypical image of a video game addict with greasy hair, mass pimples on their face, severely overweight appearance, and lack of human interaction. Although funny in its take on video game addicts- they hold truth, the truth being that in their ‘prime’ as video gamers, they were immobilized, unable to help themselves to be healthy individuals, their obsessive behavior has cost them their health, and that speaks volumes to how video game addiction distorts the brain’s chemistry.
