A big thank you from Professor Heuer and me to our Alumnx hosts who not only did a great job, but also provided information that helped us isolate flubs during the sessions that needed to be edited out. Thank you all for your diligence!

I also owe a big debt of thanks to SUNY New Paltz Art History student, Michael Grundy. Michael not only was a generous and thoughtful moderator, he also offered his expertise with Adobe Premiere to edit a number of the session videos. He also created a template to standardize the video dimensions and shared tips and tricks that really sped up the editing process for me!

Please direct any corrections to me, Susan Smutny, at demaios@newpaltz.edu. We have done our utmost to remove delays and evidence of technical difficulties that occurred during the sessions. We hope you enjoy the results, and will share the link with your friends, families, and professors.

Presentation Tip for Mac Users

Mac Users Quick Tip!

Instructions to Set Up Your MacBook for Zoom Sessions

We want to make participating in the Symposium as simple as possible.

Student-Scholars who use Macbooks may need to change their settings if they have never shared content on a Zoom call before. Mac Users usually must change settings on their computers in order share their screen when they are presenting during their session. This may require you to leave the Zoom session and log back in. It isn’t a big deal, but be prepared if you use a Mac.

To make sure you are all set, refer to the instructions on Zoom support at the following URL: https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0064868. This way you’ll be ready to go when it is your turn to give your paper!

Archaeologists Give Keynote About Incredible Discovery at Pylos, Greece

2025 Symposium Keynote Address: Lord of the Gold Rings: The Grave of the Griffin Warrior at Pylos Greece, Saturday, April 5th, at 1:00 PM EDT via Zoom

“This previously unopened shaft grave of a wealthy Mycenaean warrior, dating back 3,500 years, is one of the most magnificent displays of prehistoric wealth discovered in mainland Greece in the past 65 years.”

Be sure to attend our 2025 Keynote Address!

Dr. Sharon Stocker and Dr. Jack L. Davis of the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati will be our special guests this year. They led the team that in 2015 uncovered a spectacular Mycenaean Bronze Age tomb at Pylos, Greece, which will undoubtedly be considered one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of the 21st century. In their presentation, “Lord of the Gold Rings” on Saturday, April 5th at 1 PM EDT, they will share the incredible objects they excavated from what is now known as the Griffin Warrior Tomb. Registration Is Open

Our Schedule is a Behemoth!

Thanks for your patience! Registration is Open for all 44 Sessions of the 2025 Symposium!

All Sessions were entered as originally received. That is why there is a delay in updating any typos or changes of which we already have been notified.

Changes up to now (Noon on Wed) will be reflected in the schedule by Noon, Thursday, March 13. Future corrections will be made as quickly as we can.

This schedule is over twice the number of people who participated last year, which was twice the number from the year before! We’re not joking when we call the Symposium a Behemoth! And thanks to Mr. Blake for the image.

Please continue to direct your corrections to Professor Heuer at heuerk@newpaltz.edu. Website issues, please email me, Susan Smutny, at demaios@newpaltz.edu.

New! Graduate School Session

Save the Date! For the first time, we will hold a virtual panel discussion about graduate school for the world-wide art history undergraduate community! Join us for the Graduate School Session on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00-3:00 PM. Serving as panelists who will share their insights with students (and their families) will be Faculty and Administrators from graduate programs in the US, Canada, and the UK. Professor Heuer will host.

Plus we are building a page of Art History and Related Graduate Programs that you can check out at https://hawksites.newpaltz.edu/2025arthistorystudentsymposium/graduate-programs.

You’ll be able to register for the Graduate School Session, likely at the beginning of March, so be sure to check the Symposium Schedule when it is released.

Our Site Has A Different Look…

German Renaissance painting of a girl in a yellow dress making a flower garland as her white cat looks on.

This year we worked to make the website for the Symposium a little easier to use with new menus that remain visible even on a small device.

Plus we are really happy with our blue/gold/yellow colorway this year!

Here is shown a detail from the reverse of a German panel painting c. 1508 by the artist, Hans Süss von Kulmbach, depicting a girl making a garland. It is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 17.190.21. If you check it out, please note that Albrecht Dürer’s monogram to the right of the girl is in authentic!
