This semester we offer trainings in Hawksites, Audacity, StoryMaps (ESRI), Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe After Effects. Trainings are listed chronologically below. Note, space is limited (20), so follow the link to our Eventbrite page to sign up early!

Hawksites
September 20th @ 11am-12noon
Led by Melissa Y. Rock, DASH Lab Director

Hawksites is our campus version of WordPress. WordPress is open source software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. It just may be the easiest and most flexible blogging and website content management system (CMS) for beginners. In this training we will learn how to create and publish posts and pages; embed videos and maps; customize your site with themes, widgets, and custom menus.

Audacity
October 3rd @ 3:30-4:30pm

Audacity is a free audio editing software that is commonly used to record and edit audio files (i.e./ sound, narration, music). It can be used to record sound/narration, to edit and manipulate pre-recorded sound files, and create a final audio product that can be used in podcasting and video narration. In this training we will cover the fundamentals of using Audacity to edit recordings (including, working with multiple tracks, adjusting the volume of the various tracks, deleting audio clips, as well as integrating fade in/out into your audio project).

Adobe Photoshop
October 12th @ 10-11am

Photoshop is an Adobe editing software that is commonly used to manipulate images. It can be used to create original images and art, enhance images, and change what is expressed by an image. In this training we will cover as many of the Photoshop basics as possible, including cropping, painting, blurring, warping, and how to work with more than one image at a time.

Adobe InDesign
October 15th @ 11am-12noon
Led by Meg Tohill, DASH Lab Intern

InDesign can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books and ebooks. It can also be used to publish content suitable for tablet devices in conjunction with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. In this training, participants will learn the basic functions of Adobe Indesign. Imperative in fields dealing with print media and graphic design, students, faculty, and staff can get their feet wet in formatting content efficiently on a page.

StoryMaps (ESRI)
October 29th @ 4-5pm
Led by Leith Kusmider, DASH Lab Intern

Esri Story Maps let you combine authoritative maps with narrative text, images, and multimedia content. They make it easy to harness the power of maps and geography to tell your story. In this training you will be introduced to some of the basics to get started with this engaging software. NOTE: Because you will need access to the University license, all participants must sign up one week in advance of the training with their university email address. Late sign-ups may not be able to be accommodated because of the tight administrative timeline. So, sign up early (before 10/22) for this training!

Adobe Premeire
November 7th @12-1:30pm
Led by Eveline Levin, DASH Lab Intern

Adobe Premiere is a user-friendly video editing program used by industry professionals. Join us as we learn editing basics for simple storytelling, using image, narration, music, and video clip files. Premiere allows the user to cut, move, and organize video presentations in an orderly and artful manner. in addition, users can add fade-in and fade-out effects, and incorporate titles and subtitles. Skills learned in this workshop will be applicable to any video presentation — documentary or narrative.

Adobe After Effects
November 29th @ 4-5pm

Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of film making and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing and animation. In this training, you will be introduced to the basics of using this software for your video animation needs. Prerequisite: Adobe Premier Training (or previous experience with video editing software – Ideally Adobe Premier)
